I’ve always loved sunset, dusk and the fall of night. I love to walk after dark when the world has gone hushed and dim. But how many of us have been told its unsafe to be out alone, especially after dark? Well meaning words, usually from the men in my life. Ignoring the statistics that show us we are more likely to run into ‘trouble’ with people we know than with random strangers on the street. Imagine if we taught our sons to be afraid of the dark. To be afraid of being alone.

What if we took responsibility instead? Responsibility to watch out for others. Responsibility to create an environment that is safe for everyone. What if, instead of staying safely locked in our homes, we also went for a walk?

I recently committed an act of rebellion. I took a walk at dusk. I let the darkness fall around me and I continued on, enjoying the night air. I walked alone, and I liked it.
