Personal Work: Got To Your Studio & Make Something Series
I’ve been playing around recently with the idea of offering natural feeling Glamor/Beauty style photography for women. Unlike the growing genre of Boudoir Photography which is more focused on making you feel “hot” and turing on your husband, I want to take images of women, for women. Images that show the beauty and power within all of us. Images that are not only about physical beauty but about the light that is glowing in all of us. Every day we are flooded with images of supermodels, actresses, and Pinterest supermoms. We start to compare ourselves with these idealized women who have hair stylists, makeup artists, personal trainers, photo retouchers, skilled photographers and a small army of people who make them look perfect and larger than life. It’s a hard standard to follow. And lets face it, I’m beginning to miss my 20 year old body. Many days I feel frumpy and tired and like I’m slipping into geezerhood. Where is the beautiful, confident, optimistic woman I seem to remember being?
To counteract that little feeling of inadequacy, I started a personal project of self-love. A few years ago I started taking self portraits to remind myself of what I love about who I am. Little blocks of time where I try and capture images of the woman I want to be. And the funny thing is, through the process, I realize that I am that beautiful strong woman. I just forget. I get caught in the stream of life and forget to nurture that part of me. Having these images reminds me that I AM HER. That person I remember being is still in there, as lovely as ever. And I don’t have to be model/pinterest perfect to feel Gloriously Wonderfully Beautifully Confident in the woman I have become.
Here are the latest little reminders to myself of who I am, where I am going, the beautiful energy I carry within me, and gratitude for the life I have. ~ Sarah
